Wildfires (Nature Reserve)

Gibraltar's Upper Rock Nature Reserve is vulnerable to wildfire, particularly during dry summers. Fires can spread rapidly, threatening wildlife, property and air quality across the territory.

Who is Most at Risk?

People walking or visiting the Upper Rock Nature Reserve are at direct risk during a wildfire. Residents in areas bordering the Nature Reserve — particularly on the eastern and upper slopes — may be affected by smoke, falling embers, or be required to evacuate. Those with respiratory conditions are at increased risk from smoke inhalation across the wider territory.

Before

  • Do not light fires, use barbecues or smoke in or near the Nature Reserve — this is prohibited and a leading cause of wildfires.
  • Report any unattended fire or smoke in the Nature Reserve immediately to the Gibraltar Fire and Rescue Service.
  • If you live near the Nature Reserve, clear dry vegetation, leaves and debris from around your property.
  • Keep gutters clear — dry debris in gutters can ignite from wind-blown embers.
  • Know your evacuation route from your property and where your nearest assembly point is.
  • Keep a grab bag ready during dry summer months: water, medications, documents, torch, radio.
  • Ensure your home insurance is up to date and covers fire damage.

During

  • If you see smoke or fire in or near the Nature Reserve, call 999 immediately. Do not assume someone else has already called.
  • If evacuation is ordered, leave immediately. Do not return for belongings.
  • Close all windows, doors and vents to prevent smoke entering your home if you are sheltering in place.
  • If you are caught in the open near a wildfire, move to a cleared area or road. Lie face down if you cannot escape, covering your body.
  • Do not attempt to fight the fire yourself.
  • Stay away from areas where aerial firefighting aircraft may be operating.
  • Follow all instructions from the Gibraltar Fire and Rescue Service and police.
  • Listen to GBC Radio for updates and evacuation guidance.

After

  • Do not return to the Nature Reserve or evacuated areas until authorities confirm it is safe.
  • Avoid outdoor exercise while smoke remains in the air — particularly if you have a respiratory condition.
  • Report any smouldering embers or rekindled fire immediately to the Gibraltar Fire and Rescue Service.
  • Check on neighbours, particularly elderly residents, who may need support following evacuation.
  • Photograph any damage to your property for insurance purposes.
  • Allow the Nature Reserve time to recover — do not enter restricted zones even after the immediate danger has passed.
