Infectious Disease Outbreaks

Outbreaks of infectious disease can spread rapidly in a small, densely populated community like Gibraltar. Early action and good hygiene are key to reducing spread.

Who is Most at Risk?

Elderly people, young children, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions are at greatest risk of serious illness from infectious disease outbreaks. Healthcare workers and carers may face higher risk of exposure.

Before

  • Keep all vaccinations up to date — for you and your family. Contact your GP or GHA for advice.
  • Practise good hand hygiene: wash hands regularly and thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Keep a supply of basic medicines at home: paracetamol, oral rehydration sachets, and a thermometer.
  • Know how to contact your GP and the GHA out-of-hours service.
  • If you care for a vulnerable person, have a plan for what you would do if you or they became unwell.
  • Stay informed through official HM Government of Gibraltar channels — follow guidance on any active public health alerts.

During

  • Follow all public health guidance issued by HM Government of Gibraltar — this may include isolation, mask-wearing, or avoiding certain locations.
  • If you feel unwell, stay at home and contact your GP or call 111 before attending a clinic or hospital.
  • Wash hands frequently, especially before eating, after coughing or sneezing, and after using the toilet.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are unwell, and limit contact with vulnerable people if you are symptomatic.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of tissues immediately.
  • If advised to self-isolate, follow the full period of isolation and arrange for others to collect essentials on your behalf.
  • Do not return to work, school or public spaces until cleared by medical guidance.

After

  • Continue to follow any ongoing public health guidance even after feeling better.
  • Attend any follow-up medical appointments as recommended.
  • Disinfect frequently touched surfaces in your home — door handles, light switches, taps.
  • If a household member was seriously ill, seek advice from your GP before returning to normal routines.
  • Stay informed — outbreaks can have second waves or complications.
