Alerts & Warnings
In an emergency, getting reliable information quickly is crucial. Knowing where to turn before an incident happens means you won't waste time searching when it matters most.
In an emergency, call 999.
This page provides information on receiving warnings and alerts. If you are in immediate danger, call 999 immediately.
GBC Radio — Primary Emergency Broadcast
GBC Radio is Gibraltar's primary source of official emergency information. In a major emergency, the Gibraltar Broadcasting Corporation will broadcast continuous updates and instructions from official authorities.
- FM: 91.3 FM
- AM (MW): 1458 AM
- GBC Radio can be received on a standard battery-powered or wind-up radio — this works even during power cuts and mobile network congestion.
Why radio matters
During a major emergency, mobile networks may be congested, internet access may be unreliable, and power cuts may affect devices. A battery-powered or wind-up radio is the most resilient way to receive official emergency information. Include one in your emergency grab bag.
HM Government of Gibraltar — Official Channels
HM Government of Gibraltar issues official emergency statements and public guidance via:
- Official website: www.gibraltar.gov.gi
- Social media: Follow @GibGov on official social media platforms for real-time updates.
- Government press releases and emergency notices are also published via the Gibraltar Chronicle and GBC online.
Royal Gibraltar Police (RGP)
The RGP provides public safety information and warnings via:
- Social media: Follow @RGPolice for public safety notices, road closures, and emergency warnings.
- Non-emergency line: 200 72500
- Emergency: 999
During incidents, the RGP may issue instructions via loudhailer, door-to-door, and through official social media and GBC Radio.
Civil Contingencies Unit
The Civil Contingencies Unit (CCU) coordinates Gibraltar's emergency response and issues public guidance during major incidents. CCU information is issued through HM Government of Gibraltar channels during emergencies. This website — Emergency Preparedness — is published by HM Government of Gibraltar as a preparedness resource.
Weather Warnings
The Gibraltar Meteorological Office issues weather warnings for severe conditions affecting Gibraltar and the surrounding area.
- Weather warnings are issued on the Gibraltar Meteorological Office website and shared via HM Government of Gibraltar social media.
- Warnings use a colour-coded system (Yellow / Amber / Red) indicating the severity and likelihood of dangerous weather.
- Always act on weather warnings — particularly Red warnings, which indicate an immediate threat to life.
- For specific weather-related hazard guidance, see the Hazards section.
Stay Safe Online
During emergencies, misinformation spreads rapidly on social media. Protect yourself and others:
- Only share information from verified official sources: HM Government of Gibraltar, RGP, GHA, and GBC.
- If you are unsure whether information is accurate, do not share it.
- Check official accounts directly rather than relying on shared posts — these may be outdated or altered.
- If you see dangerous misinformation circulating, report it to the RGP on 200 72500.
